In this training or course, teachers are able to go on a discussion based journey to better communication and empathy through learning about:

  • different communication and conflict styles
  • how to reserve judgment and shift perspectives in order to communicate more effectively
  • the power of realizing impact vs intent

The Goals and Purpose of Culturally Responsive Teaching

In the book, book study, training and course, teachers will have a reflective look at the "what" and the "why" of culturally responsive teaching, and the first steps of implementation. Teachers will understand:

  • dependent and independent learners
  • Individualist and collectivist deep cultures
  • the perspectives many of their students may be bringing to the classroom
  • how the learning brain works
  • Language acquisition and preventing and serving long-term ELs

Deeper Dives and Time to Implement in Summer Workshops

Teachers need to time process, brainstorm, plan and act! After the intial trainings, these summer workshops are hands on, interactive refreshers where teachers can have the time and support to immediately implement these components of culturally responsive teaching:

The Power of the Alliance

The Beauty of a Culturally Rich Environment

Walking through the Lesson Plan System

Planning with Clarity as a Culturally Responsive Teacher

Once teachers understand the purpose of culturally responsive teaching and have built alliances and set up a culturally responsive environment, it's time to bring it into their instruction! With monthly support video, resources and coaching, teachers will be able to build

  • learning objectives and formative assessments
  • aligned questions and tasks
  • student tasks that are scaffolded and accommodated based on student need and data
  • student-centered instruction that is differentiated

We have 62+ languages spoken by families in Union Public Schools: that’s 62 cultural perspectives entering our classrooms every day. Since culture is in part the way the brain makes sense of the world, it is imperative that educators understand how to access this cultural pathway to meaning. That’s what happens when we practice the principles in Jenn’s book and PD, Building a Bridge from I Can’t to I Can. Jenn gives teachers practical tools that work to build alliances with students and families and create independent learners who will succeed.
